#35: I Don’t Think It Means What You Think It Means
I’m not entirely sure this Twitter user knows what “financial literacy” means. It just means having an understanding of how finances work—it’s not an insult that rich people hurl at the poor. If what he means is that rich people blame the poor for being poor because they make poor choices, then sure, I’ll buy that… although it is technically true that making bad financial choices will probably make you poor.
In actuality, being financially literate is an important part of lifting yourself out of poverty; if you don’t have a good grasp on your finances, chances are good that you’re going to stay poor. Instead of scaring people away from financial literacy by blasting it as a tool of the elite, why not encourage people to learn as much as they can about the topic? There are so many great, easy-to-understand books, blogs, podcasts, and YouTube videos out there to help people get started.
