Gold Standard
It is not always easy to determine whether or not a dog or cat has a fever because their body temperatures are typically higher than those of humans. Going to the veterinarian is the only way to get an accurate reading on whether or not Fido has a fever. When taking a pet’s temperature, veterinarians typically use either digital thermometers or rectal thermometers.
Rectal thermometers are still considered to be the “gold standard” by veterinarians. This is due to the fact that thermometers that are placed in the ears are susceptible to being affected by a variety of factors. The insertion of these instruments can accurately take temperatures, but they frequently cause people to make expressions like the one this cat is making.
