#12: Secretariat wins the Kentucky Derby. (May 5)
Setting a new time record for the Kentucky Deby, the racehorse known as Secretariat went on to win a Triple Crown Victory in 1973. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974 and named 35th of the 100 greatest North American athletes of all time by ESPN 25 years later.
