#6: The Godfather wins Best Picture. (March 27)
The Godfather won three Academy Awards in 1973, despite eleven nominations: Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Marlon Brando famously boycotted the Oscars that night, declining his award and sending American Indian Rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather in his place, announcing Brando’s objection to Native Americans’ depictions in Hollywood films.
