The dawn of the 20th century brought more than a change in the calendar. It marked the beginning of a world transforming at an astonishing pace. Industrialization, expanding cities, and groundbreaking inventions reshaped everyday life, changing how people worked, traveled, communicated, and even spent their free time. Yet amid all this progress, many routines still looked surprisingly different from the ones we know today. #1: The Young Oyster Shuckers of Alabama (1911)

Child labor was widespread in the early 1900s, with industries across the United States employing children in demanding roles. In 1911, the Alabama Canning Company used young workers as oyster shuckers. These children often worked long hours in hazardous conditions for very low wages, facing sharp tools and physical strain rather than attending school. Efforts to document and regulate these practices faced significant opposition before the nationwide protections were enacted.
