20 Pictures That Capture the Wild Spirit of Studio 54

July 20, 2026 by Salvador Sallent

Studio 54 only burned at full force for a few years, but it left behind enough photographs to fuel a century of nightclub mythology. From 1977 to 1980, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager’s Midtown Manhattan club became a glittering collision of disco, fashion, celebrity, theater, money, art, and very poor decision-making. Some images are perfectly documented. Others are wrapped in legend, exaggeration, and nightclub fog. Together, they show why Studio 54 still feels less like a place than a fever dream with a velvet rope.

#1: Bianca Jagger on the White Horse

The most famous Studio 54 image is also one of the most misunderstood. Bianca Jagger did not ride into the club on a white horse, as the legend usually claims. The horse was already inside for her 30th birthday celebration, and she later climbed on for the photograph. Still, Rose Hartman’s image became the definitive symbol of Studio excess: a glamorous birthday girl, a white horse, glitter, flashbulbs, and a room that seemed to have misplaced every normal rule of nightlife.
