#14: St. Barts, Caribbean
St. Barts became a billionaire whisper before it became an Instagram shout. David Rockefeller bought land there in the late 1950s, helping start the island’s reputation as an ultra-private Caribbean refuge for people who found other exclusive islands insufficiently exclusive. In the 1960s, its appeal was not mass luxury but quiet difficulty. Few places were so small, so stylish, and so determined not to seem impressed by visitors.
