Bukele smashed El Salvador’s two-party duopoly by branding himself as an anti-establishment, tech-savvy reformer. Once elected, he deployed armed soldiers into parliament to force budget approvals and used his legislative majority to replace supreme court judges. He ultimately bypassed constitutional term limits to secure reelection, constructing an authoritarian state while retaining his outsider branding.
