Grillo channeled public rage into Italy’s Five Star Movement by denouncing professional politicians as parasitic thieves. Despite promising radical grassroots democracy, Grillo operated as a behind-the-scenes boss who expelled dissenting party members. To secure actual power, his supposedly anti-establishment party eventually entered coalitions with the very establishment factions they had pledged to destroy.
