#11: Visible Laser Beams Do Not Crawl Through the Air (Star Wars, 1977)
Science fiction has trained audiences to think of laser weapons as glowing bolts that slowly travel across the screen. In reality, a laser beam moves at the speed of light, reaching its target almost instantly over the distances shown in most films. Under normal conditions, the beam itself is also invisible unless dust, smoke, or moisture scatters some of the light toward the viewer. Even then, it appears as a continuous line rather than a moving projectile. Filmmakers intentionally slow and brighten laser blasts so audiences can follow the action. While visually exciting, these cinematic lasers behave nothing like real physics.
