Some producers are remembered for clarity. Daniel Lanois is remembered just as much for atmosphere. His records often feel as though the air around the instruments matters as much as the instruments themselves. That quality served him beautifully with U2, Peter Gabriel, and Bob Dylan, especially on albums where emotional weather was part of the point.
