Body Shaming
A study found that a mother’s sense of shame and rejection in her own body is closely connected to how her daughter views her own body. Meaning if your mom has body image issues, it’s very likely she will project them into your body. While we understand this is probably not intentional, the effects of such parenting can haunt women until many years later:
The survey also found that 46% of girls reported that their body image causes them to worry ‘often’ or ‘always.’ Monitoring how and what we say to our children is parenting 101, but girls’ parents should pay extra attention to how they deliver comments on their bodies. Inevitably, girls will eventually feel self-conscious about their bodies, but it can make all the difference if we don’t contribute to it.
