Creating a Safe Space
Many of us know the struggle of not having a trustful relationship with our parents. Even as a kid, we yearn for a safe space to talk about our emotions and events in our lives, and if our parents fail to represent that, it can forever impact how we relate to them.
Children need to feel safe knowing their parents won’t see their feelings and wishes as wrong, shameful, or beyond our understanding. When kids feel like they’re being judged or reprimanded for sharing their emotions, it creates a much harder barrier to overcome the next time they try expressing themselves. Parents must be open to listening to their kids, no matter how hard the conversation may be.
