#29: Rutherford B. Hayes
Each president of the United States leaves behind a certain legacy, and when it comes to the 19th president, Rutherford B. Hayes, his would have to be his election story. At the time, in 1877, it seemed as though a Democrat by the name of Samuel Tilden was going to win the election. However, Hayes became president on a technicality that drew attention to certain flaws in the constitution.
Having served in office from 1877-1881, Rutherford B. Hayes had a big task on his hands. Following the end of the Civil War, Hayes saw the rebuilding processes that needed to take place as a result. With his high IQ of 133.9, he oversaw the Reconstruction era’s end and attempted to reconcile significant divides felt throughout the country after the Civil War.
