#5: The Rothschild Prayerbook (c. 1505–1510)
Made for a Habsburg court member in the Netherlands, this Book of Hours contains 150 illuminated pages by the finest Flemish miniaturists of the Renaissance. The Nazis confiscated it from the Austrian Rothschild family in 1938. Returned in 1999, it sold at Christie’s New York in January 2014 for $13.6 million, purchased by Australian businessman Kerry Stokes.
