#13: Lady Hester Stanhope (1776–1839)

Once a high-society aristocrat, Lady Hester abandoned Britain to roam the Middle East. She dressed as a man, consulted oracles, and led archaeological digs, including an early excavation in Palestine. Locals called her a prophetess, while Europeans thought her eccentric. She remains one of history’s most unconventional adventurers.
