#16: Loss of Fishing Rights
Venice is not only palaces and postcards; it is also a lagoon culture shaped by fishing, boats, tides, and local knowledge. Industrial tourism competes with that older relationship to the water. Boat traffic, environmental stress, and changing regulations can squeeze traditional livelihoods until they feel decorative rather than central. A lagoon without its working culture becomes scenery. Pretty scenery, sure. But Venice was not built to be just pretty.
