#3: The Cruise Ship Wake
For years, giant cruise ships became the floating symbol of Venice’s tourism problem: enormous hulls sliding past fragile architecture like someone parking a mall beside a Fabergé egg. Critics argued that ship wakes, lagoon disturbance, and visual impact threatened the city’s environment and dignity. Large cruise ships have since been banned from entering the Venice Lagoon, but the fight left scars. Venice learned that “bigger tourism” often means bigger damage.
