Forget the rose-tinted nostalgia of 1998 and those overpriced cosmopolitans. While we were busy obsessing over Carrie’s tutu, Miranda Hobbes was busy being the group’s resident rain cloud. Sure, she broke glass ceilings in a power suit, but she also spent six seasons breaking her friends’ spirits under the guise of “cynicism.” Being the grounded lawyer is one thing; being a professional killjoy who treats loyalty like a billable hour is quite another. We’ve rewatched the marathons with fresh eyes, and frankly, her brand of “keeping it real” was often just code for being miserable. Scroll through our breakdown of the moments that prove Miranda was the hardest pill to swallow in Manhattan. Did she have a point, or was she just a nightmare in Manolos? Tell us your take below.
#1: She Was Constantly Cynical
In the episode “The Agony and the ‘Ex’-tacy,” which first aired on June 3, 2001, we see the lawyer at her most pessimistic. While the girls try to enjoy a birthday dinner, she cannot stop pointing out the flaws in everyone’s lives. She treats the idea of soulmates like a fairy tale for children. We see her drain the excitement out of the room because she refuses to believe in happy endings. Her constant focus on the negative makes it hard for her friends to share their hopes with her.
