As if high school isn’t hard enough, one thing that makes it a million times worse is having a crush who doesn’t know you exist. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but most crushes don’t end in fairytale finishes; some fade away, and some end in heartbreak. Still, as crushing as crushes may be, they’re part of adolescence, part of high school, and part of life. They’re also universal, something almost everyone has had at some point. While clothes are meant for practicality (and, of course, compliance with public decency laws), they’re also a form of self-expression. Unfortunately, when it comes to trying to impress a crush, this self-expression isn’t always authentic. Most of us have worn an outfit that wasn’t us, be it a revealing dress, a tailored suit, or a jersey representing a sports team we secretly cheered against, engaging in a little counterfeit clothing and choosing duds not because we liked them but because we thought someone else would.
