#24: Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Emperor Franz Joseph I
Franz Joseph I of Austria met Elisabeth of Austria in August 1853 at Bad Ischl during an introduction meant for her older sister. He chose Elisabeth instead, redirecting Austrian court expectations in an instant. They married on 24 April 1854 in Vienna when she was 16. Their bond carried real affection, yet court protocol often strained it, as Elisabeth resisted the rigid ceremonial life around her. They had four children, including Crown Prince Rudolf, whose death in 1889 devastated the family. Afterward, she spent years traveling, while Franz Joseph remained devoted to her until her assassination in 1898, sealing her legend in European memory.
