#15: The Shrine of the Three Kings
Dominating the high altar of Cologne Cathedral in Germany, the Shrine of the Three Kings is a massive, triple-tiered gilded sarcophagus and stands as the largest reliquary in the western world. Created by the medieval goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun, it was constructed to house the bones of the biblical Magi, which were brought from Milan in 1164, an event that transformed Cologne into a major center of European pilgrimage.
