#5: A Pet Turtle or Goldfish Story
Live animals were the royalty of show and tell, but not every classroom allowed them. That is why the pet turtle or goldfish often arrived as a story, a photograph, or a nervous parent waiting near the door with a small container. A turtle could pull its head inside its shell at exactly the wrong time, disappointing half the room and thrilling the other half. A goldfish, meanwhile, might circle a bowl while everyone whispered as if it were performing.
