#9: Matsuo, Japan
The toxic industrial legacy of what was once East Asia’s largest sulfur mine left a mountainside permanently scarred and completely unlivable. Following its hasty abandonment in the 1970s, acidic runoff turned the surrounding soil a deep, unnatural orange color, stripping the landscape of its ability to support normal plant life. Heavy mists frequently roll through the empty concrete apartment blocks, creating an eerie atmosphere that locals describe as the earth’s absolute rejection of humanity.
