#12: Solaris (1972)
In Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972), space does not behave like a frontier. It behaves like memory. Based on Stanisław Lem’s novel, the film follows psychologist Kris Kelvin, played by Donatas Banionis, as he travels to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris. There, the planet’s ocean appears to create living forms from the minds and memories of the people on board.
