#18: Moon (2009)
Loneliness has a different texture on the far side of the moon. In Moon (2009), Duncan Jones’s quiet debut film, Sam Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a worker nearing the end of a three-year contract mining helium-3 at a lunar base. His main companion is GERTY, a calm-voiced computer voiced by Kevin Spacey, whose smiley-face screen gives the film an odd mixture of warmth and unease. The story slowly becomes a meditation on identity, labor, memory, and what makes a person feel real.
