There is something oddly comforting about watching a stranded astronaut make a plan. In The Martian (2015), Ridley Scott turns Mars into a survival puzzle, and Matt Damon’s Mark Watney faces it with humor, science, and a good deal of stubbornness. After being left behind during an emergency evacuation, Watney has to grow food, make water, repair equipment, communicate with NASA, and keep himself sane.
