#9: Chinese Five-Spice
Like its name insinuates, Chinese five-spice is a blend of five spices (although some blends include more). Chinese five-spice is often a mixture of star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds. It’s a common component of Chinese cuisine and adds a warm, sweet, and slightly peppery undertone to everything from marinades and rubs to stir-fries and meat dishes. It’s also used sparingly in cakes and cookies.
