Near the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, strict bans exist on bringing any non-native seeds or unapproved soil into the area. The vault is designed to preserve global crop diversity in pristine conditions, and contamination could undermine decades of preservation work. Even a single stray seed could introduce invasive species or microorganisms. The rule protects what is essentially humanity’s agricultural backup plan.
