Benjamin Hornigold was one of the leading pirates of the early 1700s and helped shape the Bahamas as a pirate stronghold. In 1717, he stopped a merchant ship near Honduras and demanded only the crew’s hats because his men had drunkenly thrown theirs overboard the night before.
