Whitney Hedgepeth
Whitney Hedgepeth became an Olympic medalist during her second stint in 1996. She first participated in 1988 but placed eighth. Eight years later in Atlanta, she would win two silver medals in individual events, as well as a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay. After the Atlanta Games, she retired from competitive swimming.
In 2007, Whitney became a part of her alma mater’s sports hall of fame, while 2010 saw Whitney inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Seven years later, her daughter, Dakota Luther, would join her mother’s footsteps by becoming a competitive swimmer. Dakota placed 15th in the World Aquatics Championships in the 200-meter butterfly event.
