#43: It All Adds Up
Every year, I spend around $50 getting school supplies for the classroom. If every parent does it for all thirty students, that’s $1500 worth of stuff coming in the door, and it’s still not enough to keep a classroom running. In the 2020-2021 school year, teachers spent on average $750 of their own money to ensure the classroom had what it needed.
For some people, that’s more than a month’s worth of rent! Some teachers spend twice that amount, depending on how much parents pitch in and how much the school allocates each year for a budget. It’s funny how in most professions, you steal office supply from the office and take it home, but when it comes to teaching, it’s the other way around.
