The Vatican and a hammer
This one is a little frightening. In 1972, Laslo Taut, an Australian man who was most likely suffering from mental illness, visited St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It’s not unusual for numerous individuals to visit Vatican City.
The fact that Laslo had a hammer on him and attacked Michaelangelo’s Pieta statue fifteen times while screaming, “I am Jesus Christ, risen from the dead,” was terrifying. Laslo was 33 years old at the time, which was thought to be the age at which Jesus died. Instead of serving time in prison, he was referred to a therapist. Though no one knows how much it will cost to repair the statue, it was insured for $10 million in 1964, which is equivalent to roughly $81 million now.
