The sculpture’s symbolism was significant. It honors Lono, an ancient Hawaiian god of peace, prosperity, regeneration, and the harvest, in the Makahiki, the Hawaiian new year’s celebrations.
Nobody should tamper with historical customs. If you’re willing to mess with the gods, be prepared for a lot of terrible karma.
