#10: The Alibi Falls Apart
Leopold and Loeb claimed they had spent the evening driving around in Leopold’s car, eventually picking up two young women. The story seemed designed to explain their movements without involving the rented vehicle used in the crime. Then Leopold’s chauffeur revealed that his car had been undergoing repairs and had not been available. That single fact demolished the alibi. Their supposedly airtight story had depended on a vehicle that could be proven to have gone nowhere.
