Nathan Leopold was paroled in 1958 after serving roughly thirty-three years. He moved to Puerto Rico, where he tried to construct a quieter second life away from Chicago notoriety. He worked in medical and social-service settings, pursued academic interests, and continued his lifelong fascination with birds. Leopold also published an autobiography.
