#19: Hollywood Could Not Resist
The case became a cultural template for stories about brilliant young killers convinced of their own superiority. Most famously, Patrick Hamilton’s play Rope drew inspiration from the crime, and Alfred Hitchcock adapted it into his 1948 film starring James Stewart. Later novels, movies, plays, documentaries, and true-crime programs returned repeatedly to Leopold and Loeb. Their crime endured because it contained every sensational ingredient publishers love: wealth, intellect, arrogance, murder, psychology, and courtroom drama.
