#4: The Charge of the Light Brigade (1854)
A confused order on October 25, 1854, sent the British Light Brigade charging into history. During the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, Lord Cardigan’s cavalry unit was told to advance. But a communication breakdown sent them down the wrong valley, directly toward a formidable Russian artillery position they were never meant to attack. With cannons firing from three sides, the horsemen galloped into a wall of fire. The charge was brave, poetic, and utterly pointless. It resulted in devastating casualties for the brigade, wiping out a significant portion of its men and horses. The episode became a famous and tragic example of how military disasters can begin with a few poorly chosen words from the top.
