The standard gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches dates back to early British railways, which were influenced by tramways. Those tramways, in turn, were built to match wagon wheels. The spacing of those wheels can be traced even further back to Roman chariots, which wore ruts into roads that later vehicles followed. What seems arbitrary today is actually a long chain of inherited decisions.
