#6: Purple Noon (1960)
Before Ripley became a prestige adaptation hobby, Alain Delon made him sunlit, beautiful, and terrifying in Purple Noon. René Clément’s version of The Talented Mr. Ripley replaces Gothic darkness with Mediterranean glare, which somehow makes the amorality feel worse. Delon’s Tom Ripley is all charm, envy, calculation, and cheekbones sharp enough to sign documents. The tension comes from watching beauty rot in real time. Lovely beaches, terrible morals, excellent tailoring.
