#19: New Technology Can Unmask Forgeries That Survived Earlier Generations of Experts
A document accepted decades ago does not automatically remain beyond question forever. Authentication techniques continue to improve, allowing researchers to revisit objects with tools unavailable to earlier scholars. Multispectral imaging can uncover erased or obscured writing, microscopic examination can expose printing characteristics, and chemical analysis can distinguish materials that once appeared identical. Digitized archives also make comparison dramatically easier because specialists can examine large collections of verified handwriting, watermarks, typefaces, and historical records without traveling between numerous institutions. This means a deception capable of satisfying the strongest examination available in one generation may fail under another generation’s technology. The reverse is important as well: new analysis can sometimes strengthen the attribution of an object previously treated with suspicion.
