#19: Marilyn Manson
The shock-rocker known as Marilyn Manson has built a career on a dark persona. He says much of that identity was forged in a difficult childhood. Born Brian Hugh Warner in Canton, Ohio, in 1969, he was raised by his mother and his stepfather, who legally adopted him. His relationship with his stepfather wasn’t easy. He described his upbringing as strict and sometimes harsh, creating tension that he channeled into his art and music. For him, the suburban conformity he grew up with was something to react against. He transformed Brian Warner into Marilyn Manson, a figure designed to challenge the world that had shaped him.
