#21: Sarah McLachlan
Sarah McLachlan’s emotional ballads have soundtracked a generation, and her own story is one of love and support. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1968, the Canadian singer-songwriter was adopted as an infant by Jack and Dorice McLachlan. He was a marine biologist, she was a guidance counselor, and they raised her in a musical household, encouraging her talents from a young age. She has said her adoption was always an open and positive part of her life. While she did connect with her birth mother later in life as an adult, she credits her adoptive parents for giving her the foundation for everything.
