#4: Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles in 1926. Her childhood was anything but glamorous. With her mother unable to care for her due to mental illness, Norma Jeane was shuttled between a series of foster homes and an orphanage. At 16, she married James Dougherty, partly to avoid being sent back into the foster care system. She later said those early years of constant uncertainty created a lifelong need for love and a sense of belonging.
