#38: Argentavis, Largest Bird Known to Exist
There was a time when everything on Earth was supersized. No, we’re not talking about McDonald’s combos; we’re talking about bugs, plants, birds, you name it. Sure, dinosaurs were massive, but after them came many other species that were far bigger than the descendants that survive today.
This bird was nicknamed the Argentavis because its fossils were found in Argentina, as it had apparently flown there for millions of years. It is considered the heaviest flying bird in history and is estimated to have had a wingspan of between 16 and 21 feet. It weighed around 154 to 159 pounds and could have easily destroyed anything in its way…
