When it comes to fast food, the American people are no strangers to the concept. Many of these restaurant chains have been around longer than you and me, but some were established during the last 40 years. While some of these fast food chains have since franchised and found great success, each one of these establishments started from scratch. There might have been a time when these restaurants were considered a treat and a novelty, but we have become accustomed to seeing these restaurants everywhere in today’s world. But sometimes, we wish we could return to the good old days and order a burger for 40 cents and go on our way…
#30: Taco Bell
Year Founded: 1962
Original Location: Downey, CA
Taco Bell was founded in 1962 by business owner Glen Bell, whose last name is featured in the business name. That’s right, “Taco Bell” isn’t named after an actual bell. Like any business dream, Glen started small with a hotdog stand until he noticed a restaurant across the street selling tacos that was doing exceptionally well.
After speaking to the establishment’s owners, they agreed to teach him how to make tacos. In 1951, he opened his little taco stand, perfecting the recipe for years, eventually turning into what we know today as Taco Bell. Fun fact: the original Taco Bell building currently resides in the parking lot of the corporate headquarters in Irvine.
