#15: Burger King
Year Founded: 1953
Original Location: Miami, FL
Weirdly enough, the burger chain we know and love today as Burger King was once known as Insta-Burger King. Created in 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida, Keith Kramer and his uncle-in-law, Matthew Burns, opened a few stories after buying an “Insta-Broiler,” which could cook 12 burgers at the same time.

Unfortunately, the company went bust in 1959 and was purchased by James McLamore and David Edgerton, who rebranded the company to Burger King. The pair replaced the insta-broiler with a flame broiler, which ultimately became their claim to fame, and sold the company to Pillsbury in 1967 for $18 million.
