Introduced in 1908 and lasting until 1972, tandem cycling required two riders on a single bike to sprint with precision. The lead cyclist controlled steering while both contributed power. Success depended on perfect synchronization as well as strength. Advances in individual cycling events eventually pushed tandems out of favor.
