Flip a switch. Open a fridge. Glide through a yellow light. Zero thought required, and that’s exactly the point. But behind every one of these everyday miracles sits a brilliant mind. Some of the most revolutionary ideas of the modern era came from Black inventors, but sadly, whether for racism or mere ignorance, their names rarely made it into textbooks. These overlooked minds’ work runs deeper than gears and patent filings. Let’s review each of them and the inventions we must be thankful for.
#1: Garrett Morgan – Three-Position Traffic Signal
Every time you stop at a red light, thank Garrett Morgan. Before his 1923 patent for the three-position traffic signal, intersections were a mess. Morgan, born in Kentucky in 1877, added the warning interval that gave drivers time to slow down. He was a self-taught inventor who first made his name with hair-straightening products before focusing on public safety. Morgan also developed an early gas mask, the smoke hood, which saved lives during a 1916 tunnel disaster in Cleveland. He eventually sold his traffic signal design to General Electric for a handsome $40,000. He died in 1963.
