The fight for civil rights in the early 1960s was full of great bravery, strength, and sacrifice. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Freedom Riders were two of the most important symbols at this time. These pictures, taken by Paul Schutzer and Howard Sochurek, show how brave and tense it was for people who were fighting for equal rights.
#1: Bayonets on the Bus
This picture shows Julia Aaron and David Dennis sitting quietly on a bus going from Montgomery to Jackson, with National Guard members next to them. The soldiers, who are wearing helmets and carrying heavy rifles, show how hard it is to find a balance between protection and fear. You can feel the tension in the picture, is was really hard to protect the Freedom Riders.
